I Love Touring Italy - Eastern Liguria

If you are thinking of a European tourist destination, why not consider the region of Liguria in the north of Italy, commonly known as the Italian Riviera? This narrow strip of land is in the Ligurian Sea near Monaco and the French Riviera. While not discover Liguria, its crowds are much smaller than the next. There are many small towns or villages, and an international port city almost right in the middle of the coast. This This article explores Liguria Genoa, or as the locals call it, Riviera de Levante (Riviera of the Rising Sun.) Be sure to read the other articles in this series: eastern Liguria, Genoa and Cinque Terre, five little coastal towns which could only steal your heart.

Begin the journey just east of Genoa in the coastal town of Nervi. We continue down the southeast coast of the promontory of Portofino and the towns of Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino. Then it's time return to the main coast and several destinations: Rapallo, Moneglia, La Spezia, Lerici and finally.

The town of Nervi near Genoa has been a complex more than one hundred years. Swimming is not recommended due to contamination of Genoa. You can visit in July, when Nervi hosts the International Ballet Festival. Nervi highlight is its mile-long (1.5 km) Passeggiata (Promenade) Anita Garibaldi name of the wife and comrade in arms of the famous Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi, the founder of the modern Italian state. Return to this great mall, but first let's talk about Mrs. Garibaldi. Born in Brazil before the independence of a poor family and raised by a single mother. She married at age 14. Garibaldi is said that when his eyes first requirement could only whisper, "You have to be mine." And it was. Giuseppe sailor taught about the gaucho culture of his country and fought beside him in many battles. The couple had four children and died in carrying her fifth child several years before the independence of Italy. In 1860, when Garibaldi rode his horse to greet Victor Emmanuel II as King of United Italy, wore striped scarf Anita on its gray poncho South America.

The carved rock-mile (1.5 km) Passeggiata (Promenade) Anita Garibaldi is full of palm trees and orange in its 300 acres (120 hectares) of park. Be sure to visit the Villa Grimaldi Park, with its magnificent collection of roses. And do not forget Anita Garibaldi.

Santa Margherita Ligure, the population of about ten thousand, is an ancient city, luxury resort. There is a sixteenth century castle, and some churches and villages to visit. If you have money you can stay in a top of the line hotel, with a much lower cost than in neighboring Portofino, which is a famous tourist attraction has been recreated, as it were, in Japan and the Portofino Bay Resort in Orlando, Florida.

Portofino, a town about five hundred, not counting the tourists is considered very large one of the most beautiful Mediterranean ports. Be sure to see the Castello di San Giorgio (Castillo de San Jorge) old enough to be restored in the sixteenth century with its beautiful gardens, views, and display that shows the illustrious visitors, from Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, and Prince Rainier in the game. When you have seen enough of these pictures walk to the lighthouse and watch from afar Portofino Villas. Stop at a cafe and watch the fishing boats and ferries go by. Then on foot or by boat to the tenth-eleventh century Abbey of San Fructuoso now a conservation site, which occasionally exhibits.

Portofino and its surroundings are protected by the Parco Naturale Regionale di Portofino (Regional Natural Park of Portofino) and the Marine Protected Area di Portofino (Portofino Marine Protected Area). Visit them both to enjoy the flora and fauna on land and sea.

Rapallo, population about thirty thousand, was initially established in the eighth century BC, perhaps by the Greeks and Etruscans. During the World War hosted a major conference and later became the site of two peace treaties, including Russian-German Treaty of Rapallo in 1922. All know how well it worked. Rapallo was once a major tourist center, but has not kept pace with the times. Do not miss the XI century cathedral of Saints Gervasio and Protasio with a large bell tower and paints. The Church of Santo Stefano, the first parish church in Rapallo, is the oldest building in the city. Century was built before XI. Other churches include the Church of San Francisco, the sixteenth-century Church of St. Francis of Assisi, the Shrine of the century XVI and XVII of Nostra Signora di Montallegro (Sanctuary of Our Montallegro Lady), and the thirteenth century the Monastery of Valle Christi, abandoned for more than four centuries because of the pirates. Visit local castles that were built to defend against pirates. For another view of life visit the Museo del Pizzo a tombolo (lace Museum of Rapallo).

Moneglia whose population numbers approximately two thousand seven hundred is a quiet town destination that is less expensive than their more famous neighbors. Welcomes the Niccolo Paganini International Guitar Competition. Moneglia is related to the outside world by a long series of old tunnels. With a bit of bad luck that can easily stop for a quarter of an hour before the light turns green. Imagine if it were more popular.

You may decide to skip La Spezia, the population of ninety-five thousand, due to its relative size large. You should not. For example, the thirteenth-century abbey church of Santa Maria Assunta (Our Lady of the Assumption) has a large collection of works art, often originating from other churches demolished in recent years. La Spezia is home to at least eight museums ranging from the Technical Museum Navale (Naval Museum Technician) to the Centro Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, often known by its initials in Italian CAMECO. Do not miss the recently restored Castello di San Giorgio (Castillo de San Jorge), with its Museum of the Castello, houses the pre-Roman and Roman artifacts.

Lerici, the population of about eleven thousand, marking the end of our Travel Riviera di Levante. Unfortunately, it also marked the end of the English poet Shelley who drowned in the Bay of Spezia to Lerici return to his beloved. Actually lived in the nearby town of San Terenzo. El Golfo di Lerici Golfo dei Poeti was renamed in honor of Shelley and his friend and fellow poet, Lord Byron. Be sure to check the thirteenth century Castello di Lerici (Lerici Castle) overlooking the bay for centuries and now houses a museum paleontology. What about food? Liguria has a good price and by so you can always find a seafood restaurant. One favorite is the anchovies are eaten as appetizers or as main course. Most Popular fish include "Swordfish, tuna, sardines, and bass.

We will propose a tasting menu, one of the many. Zuppa di Pesce Begin (fish soup). Then try one Pescato of Giorno Ligure mode (Catch of the day, Liguria style - with potatoes, olives and pine nuts.) For dessert, relax with Canestrelli, literally little boxes (donuts with sugar glass.) sure to increase your dining pleasure by including local wines with your meal.

Let us conclude this article with a quick look at Liguria wine. Liguria is not much room for wine grapes. It is 19th among the 20 Italian regions, both in the area dedicated to wine and total wine production year. Around 34% of its wine is red or pink, leaving 66% white. The region is home to eight DOC wines. DOC means Controlled Appellation of Origin, which can be translated as designation of origin, probably a high quality wine. About 14% of Ligurian wine carries the DOC designation.

There are three DOC wines in the Riviera di Levante, the Cinque Terre without to be discussed in a separate article. The Gulf of Tigullio DOC is produced near Portofino in a wide variety of local grapes in a large variety of styles. The dry Colli di Luni DOC occurs both in Liguria, near La Spezia and in neighboring Tuscany in numerous styles of white grapes Vermentino, Sangiovese red grapes, and several local grapes. La Colline di Levanto DOC is a dry white wine or red based on white Vermentino grape, red Sangiovese grape, grapes and various locations. Liguria wine exports very little in North America so you may have to go there to taste the wines. In fact there are many reasons to visit this beautiful area.
