Product Description |
Amateur or expert, every angler dreams of landing "the big one," but that's only part of the appeal of fly fishing. Because even when hours pass without a bite, nothing beats the rugged beauty of the surroundings. For both armchair travelers and avid lovers of the outdoors, who may have already started a checklist of their own, Fifty Places to Fly Fish Before You Die maps out the meccas of the fly-fishing world. Through in-depth interviews with the sport's acknowledged gurus, author Chris Santella goes beyond standard guides to convey the very essence of the recommended locations. Readers can vicariously cast mouse patterns to fifty-pound taimen in the wilds of Mongolia, wrangle with wily permit off the Florida Keys, and match the hatch on Montana's Armstrong's Spring Creek. Jardines de la Reina, Cuba (tarpon), the Zhupanova River, Kamchatka (rainbow trout), and the Rio Negro, Brazil (peacock bass) are also included. The essays include a cultural and natural history of each site, along with colorful anecdotes based on the author's and authorities' experiences. With breath-takingly-beautiful photos of the spots, many by celebrated fly-fishing photographer R. Valentine Atkinson, the book also provides adventurous anglers with enough travel-and-tackle information so that they, too, can start planning excursions to go fish around the globe.

If you have unlimited funds and time this book provides the backbone for a lifetime of fishing trips to exotic locales. Initially I bought the book as a gift for a flyfishing addict but it was such a great read that I ended up buying a second book for myself. The photography is outstanding and so far I've visited 2 of the places in the book and they both ranked as the top trips I'veever taken. 2 down and 48 more to go!!!

I was drawn to this book by the beautiful photo on the cover. While I am not a flyfisher, I enjoy the outdoors and camping near rivers and lakes. I absolutely loved all the photos, and the exquisite descriptions of the surroundings. I bought the book for my flyfisher son-in-law, but decided to buy another for myself to enjoy. The flyfisher in your life is certain to appreciate this timeless book.

I boutht this book for my father for Father's Day and he hasn't let it out of his sight since. He has read it cover to cover at least twice. Pictures beautiful and descriptions detailed. I think he is making his reservations for next year on Christmas Island. He was with us the week I gave it to him and he told everyone about the book. What a buy! I will have to get another copy if I want to read it -- it definitely will not be passed on throughout the rest of us fly fishermen in the family.

Although by no means a seasoned fly-fisher, I was drawn to this book as a catalyst for dreams about future excursions to locations remote, exotic, and even intimidating. The author sets the stage for 50 fascinating road trips that would likely be unmatched in their combination of fishing challenge and natural beauty. I can imagine anglers will be racing to complete the circuit of destinations for years to come. The author provides helpful fishing info for the true enthusiast (much of it over my head), but also adds a captivating flavor for each location's surroundings, including lodging tips. The photography is quite beautiful, too. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable reference. Maybe the next edition will include golf courses, too!

I really haven't in depth reviewed this, but I bought it for a friend who is an avid flyfisherman and I hope he can make it to all the places before he dies! I do think he has been to quite a few already, so maybe a later review would be in order.
